Development Director

Reports to: President of IT-oLogy
Effective Date: March 2014
Territory: Primarily South Carolina and North Carolina

    Position Summary:
    • The Development Director of IT-oLogy develops and implements strategies and campaigns to achieve a high level of philanthropic support for IT-oLogy priorities and community engagement. He/she provides administrative direction, oversight, and supervision to the development activities of the IT-oLogy projects and programs selected by the IT-oLogy Board. Anticipating significant development work, the Development Director will develop and implement strategies and policies to accomplish fund development objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Fund Development Leadership
    • Directs IT-oLogy’s philanthropic program and has principal responsibility for the formulation of overall fundraising vision, multi-year strategy, and initiatives
    • Collaborates with leadership, Board members, donors, and other IT-oLogy staff to develop opportunities for philanthropic support that are aligned with IT-oLogy’s strategic priorities
    • Advances the role of philanthropy in institutional strategic and operational planning
    • Collaborates with the President to set and successfully implement fund development plans
    • Develops and leads IT-oLogy staff implementation of fund development initiatives and campaigns
    • Solicits top-level major gifts in partnership with IT-oLogy’s Board Chairman, President, and Board-level volunteers
    • Leads IT-oLogy staff in setting and achieving annual fund development goals
    • Serves as key external fund development professional on behalf of IT-oLogy
    • Manages the fundraising budget with exceptional financial and budgetary skills, while leading staff and volunteers in appropriate, cost-effective fundraising activities
    • Directs and manages activities of the IT-oLogy Development Committee and supports the Branch level development officers in the management activities of the local Advisory Boards
    • Responsible for Branch level development officer development, including recruitment, training, and retention
    • Works closely with the sales team to create cohesive funding opportunities
  • Fundraising Team Leadership
    • Encourages the professional development and growth of fundraising staff through individual mentoring, professional education, and experience opportunities
    • Develops among appropriate staff personal ownership of fund development goals and objectives and personal commitment to success through collaborative plan development and decision-making
    • Disseminates industry and technical know-how effectively to appropriate staff and others to enhance performance and knowledge
    • Effectively communicates the values, mission, and best traditions of IT-oLogy
    • Motivates individuals within (and affiliated with) the organization to achieve excellence
    • Promotes team-oriented values and behavior
  • Community/Professional Leadership
    • Functions effectively as a spokesperson for IT-oLogy and promotes a positive image in the community and the profession
    • Serves as a senior executive and active member of the IT-oLogy Executive Leadership Team
    • Influences public agenda through active participation in boards, community groups, and professional societies
    • Communicates and demonstrates personal commitment to the community and profession through words and behavior

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

  • At least five years of fundraising experience, ideally with an economic development organization or higher education institution
  • Proven track record of personal cultivation calls of major corporate, foundation, and individual donor prospects and successful solicitation of major and principal gifts
  • Experience in building a strong corporate partnership program and securing significantly sized corporate gifts
  • Experience analyzing organizations and knowledge of national fundraising best practices – including newer methods such as social venture capital models
  • The ability to inspire and motivate boards and committees, as well as development teams in new and innovative ways
  • Must possess a depth of leadership experience that will lead to success in building a balanced fundraising program and leading a geographically dispersed team of fundraisers, capable of executing strategies to achieve fundraising goals to advance the IT-oLogy mission
  • Ability to develop and implement a vision and multi-year strategy for philanthropy
  • Possess excellent leadership, communication and relationship building skills demonstrated through a successful professional career history with all levels of business and community leaders, management, and employees
  • Proven ability to achieve operational efficiency and optimal use of resources; demonstrated track record in planning, monitoring, and tightly managing a budget
  • Regarded as an excellent strategist, analyst and problem solver, innovative thinker
  • Experience with public and private grant making processes
  • Experience working with customer relationship management software
  • General knowledge of IT terms and principles

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or related field from accredited college or university or commensurate specifically related work experience.
